How to Call an Ambulance or Fire Department in Japan
In the event of a fire or medical emergency, please call 119. 
119 is the emergency number used to request an ambulance or fire department assistance in Japan.
Ambulance and fire department services are free of charge.
When to Call 119
Please call 119 in the following situations:
・Fire ・Traffic accident ・Serious injury ・Sudden illness or medical emergency

How to Call 119
1. Call 119
If someone nearby can speak Japanese, please ask them to speak on your behalf.
2. Explain the Emergency
The emergency operator will ask you several questions. Please stay calm and answer clearly.
【If You Can Speak Japanese】
・Say “Ambulance” or “Fire”
・Clearly explain your address or location
・Speak slowly and calmly
【If You Cannot Speak Japanese】
・Say “No Japanese”
・If possible, tell the operator your country
・Please stay on the line and do not hang up
Multilingual Support

Multilingual support is available.
Three-way simultaneous interpretation is provided through a telephone interpretation center.
This service is available 24 hours a day.
※Please do not hang up while waiting to be connected to an interpreter.
After Calling 119 
An ambulance or fire engine will be dispatched immediately.
Emergency services will respond as quickly as possible.
About Ambulance Transportation 
One person may ride in the ambulance with the patient.
If possible, we ask that someone who can speak Japanese accompany the patient.
Please note that transportation back home or from the hospital must be paid for at your own expense(such as taxi fare).
